Reflections From The Field

Journal Entry 2 -  Last Day

This is our last full day here. I've been noticing how the doctors act and how they take care of themselves. I notice they all take time out to write in the journals throughout the day and also in the evenings. They take a lot of pictures to document their trip and send photos to friends and family on Facebook and e-mail. Alex is Keller's partner and travel companion. They take so many pictures and video its like they are producing their own documentary. Both of them have a good eye for composition and I find myself in competition for a shot.

Alex, Keller and Rochon have all washed their clothes. Rochon speaks to his wife in Bangalore each day. Becky calls Brian back in the States. Dr. Becky buys gifts for people here and to bring back for people in the States. She auctions off her gifts to raise money to help with the kid’s healthcare. Debra goes out of her way to get things for the girls who are always helping, cooking, carrying, and communication with the villagers for us. The other day she bought nail polish and underwear for the girls. She buys all the kids candy and chips, which they devour on movie night leaving confetti of wrappers amongst the crumpled and sleepy bodies when the lights come up.

I brought the boys a hacky sac from home and somehow I forget to pack my hiking boots, jacket, hat, gloves, socks, and raingear. I tearfully imagine tiny feet gleefully stomping in muddy puddles on the soccer field, tiny arms in my coat with sleeves rolled and bunched up, my hat pulled tight over someone’s ears surrounding their smiling face. And just maybe if I leave enough pieces of me here it wont be so sad to leave them. I'll film our exit in auto. It’s hard to pull focus with tears in my eyes.

Love,

Michael
